Students from 19 schools in Bogor - from elementary through high school -took part in the Sundanese Language Appreciation Festival in Kampung Budaya,

n the festival, which encouraged the younger generation to use the
language more, students took part . in several competitions, including
writing a story, calligraphy using the ancient Sundanese script from the
13* Century, storytelling and poetry reading, all in Sundanese.
The head of the organizing committee, Deden Wibawa, said many
Sundanese children rarely used the language and preferred colloquial
language. Even if they do speak in Sundanese, they oftenmix in
Indonesian or English words.
"We are concerned about the poor appreciation of our youngsters
toward their own language. We held this festival to familiarize the
children with Sundanese language and culture. You can tell about a
nation from its language. If the language is gone, so is the nation,"
said Deden.
The head of the Cultural and Tourism Agency of the city of Bogor,
Artiana Yanar Anggraini, agreed. "We support this event... We expect it
will become an annual festival because it fits our campaign to preserve
Sundanese culture and to promote it to local and foreign tourists," she
said.
Most of the elementary students who joined in the storytelling
competition picked a popular bedtime story titlednff Kuya JeungMonyet
(The tale of the tortoise and the monkey). The students, between 9 and
11 years old. delivered the story with lively, animate gestures.
